Our Story
Bures Valley Vineyard is a family-run vineyard nestled in the beautiful Stour Valley on the Essex–Suffolk border, overlooking the village of Bures. What began as a simple dream has grown into an exciting and ambitious vineyard rooted in its rural surroundings.
Chris, Laraine and Adam originally set out in search of a property with enough land to plant a small number of vines as a retirement project. After a lengthy search, they discovered Butlers Farm and immediately fell in love with the setting and its potential. Laraine's 4th Great Grandparents, Samuel and Eliza were married in St Johns Church Mount Bures in 1828, so it felt like coming home. The church is part of the stunning landscape that is a feature of the Vineyard.
In 2022, they purchased the farm and made the bold decision to establish a vineyard on a commercial scale.
The following year marked the beginning of their vineyard journey. In 2023, almost 25,000 vines were planted across 6.25 hectares of Butlers Farm, transforming the landscape into what is now Bures Valley Vineyard. Despite having no agricultural or viticultural background, their shared love of wine and determination to succeed has driven the project forward.
Today, six grape varieties are growing in the vineyard, including uniquely, Marsanne. Together, these vines are being nurtured to produce a range of still and sparkling wines that reflect the vineyard’s unique landscape and microclimate.
With its first commercial release planned for 2026, Bures Valley Vineyard is steadily building a thoughtful, quality-driven identity—one that is firmly rooted in family, place and a passion for wine.
